The White House Monday sent three long-delayed free trade agreements to Congress, setting the stage for their passage.
The pacts with South Korea, Colombia and Panama could now finally become law after years of delay. Republican House Speaker John Boehner has said he believes that could happen by mid-October.
The move came two months after Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper travelled to Latin America in a push to diversify Canada's economy away from its heavy focus on the United States.
Canada already has a free-trade deal with Colombia, as well as agreements with Costa Rica, Panama, Peru and Chile.
The Canadian government has been in free-trade talks for a decade with the so-called Central American Four, consisting of Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua.
U.S. President Barack Obama has made trade a centrepiece of his economic agenda. He says the free-trade agreements will support tens of thousands of American jobs and boost U.S. exports.
The White House had held off sending Congress the final legislation until the Senate approved an assistance package for workers who lose their jobs to foreign competition.
